The 1995 animated film "Ghost in the Shell" (directed by Mamoru Oshii) celebrated its 30th anniversary on November 18th, with director Oshii commenting, "Before I knew it, 30 years had passed. I believe the reason this work continues to be loved even after changing media, from film to video to DVD, is thanks to the power of the original work and the support of everyone."
The 30th anniversary logo, designed by artist YOSHIROTTEN, was also unveiled. YOSHIROTTEN commented, "It's been 30 years since the film Ghost in the Shell was released in 1995. And now, with the setting of the film, 2029, fast approaching, the work that appears before us is no longer just an 'old sci-fi anime.' It evokes a strange feeling that, with the times, we ourselves have drawn closer to that world. We are now beginning to experience the supposedly coming age of AI. Is the city in front of us reality? Or is it a world of information projected on a hologram? Appearing with flashing light, it eventually dissolves into the darkness like optical camouflage - this logo design was born from that image."
To commemorate the 30th anniversary, the official "Ghost in the Shell" YouTube channel will feature an interview with director Mamoru Oshii titled "We Asked Director Oshii 30 Questions," an introductory feature called "Ghost in the Shell for Beginners," and the first in a series of new character promotional videos, "Motoko Kusanagi ver."
"Ghost in the Shell" is a science fiction manga by Masamune Shirow that began serialization in 1989 in the "Young Magazine Pirate Edition," a supplement to the manga magazine "Young Magazine" (Kodansha). It depicts Public Security Section 9 (Ghost in the Shell), led by Motoko Kusanagi, a Motoko Kusanagi with exceptional abilities in cyber warfare and combat, as they take on increasingly sophisticated and violent crimes.
The animated film "GHOST IN THE SHELL" follows Motoko Kusanagi and the rest of Public Security Section 9 as they pursue a hacker known as the Puppet Master, who is on the international wanted list. The film has also gained popularity overseas, reaching number one on the US Billboard video charts for the week.
It has also been announced that the new TV anime series "Ghost in the Shell" will be broadcast in the new anime time slot "Kaanibal!!" on Kansai TV and Fuji TV at 11pm on Tuesdays. The first large-scale exhibition spanning the entire "Ghost in the Shell" anime series, "Ghost in the Shell Exhibition: Ghost and the Shell," will be held from January 30th to April 5th, 2026, at TOKYO NODE GALLERY A/B/C (Minato-ku, Tokyo).
