It has been announced that a new anime series based on Shigeru Mizuki's manga "Akuma-kun" will begin airing on TOKYO MX and other channels from January Getsuku, 2026. The series will begin streaming on Netflix in November 2023, and will be broadcast on terrestrial television for the first time. This will be the first new anime series in approximately 33 years since the TV anime that aired from 1989 to 1990, and Junichi Sato, the series director of the 1989 TV anime, will serve as general director.
The new anime is set in a world more than 30 years after the 1989 TV anime, where Ichiro Umeruki, a genius boy raised by demons, tackles mysterious incidents caused by demons together with his partner Mephisto III. Yuki Kaji will play Umeruki Ichiro, also known as Akuma-kun. Mita Yuko will play the original Akuma-kun/Shingo Umeruki, and Toshio Furukawa will play Mephisto II, with the cast from the 1989 TV anime continuing to appear. Furukawa will also play the new character Mephisto III.
"Akuma-kun" was first published in 1963 when Mizuki was a rental manga artist, and was a popular series that was also serialized in "Weekly Shonen Magazine" (Kodansha) and "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha). It depicts the story of Akuma-kun, a Akuma-kun boy who appears once in 10,000 years, who, with the help of the devil and the twelve apostles, tries to create a utopia without conflict or hunger.
