It has been revealed that the box office revenue of the animated film "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-," based on the music-based character rap project "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- (Hypnosis Mic)," has surpassed 2 billion yen. The film, Japan's first interactive film in which the outcome of the rap battle is decided by audience votes via a smartphone app, was released in 85 theaters on February 21st. Due to the interactive equipment required, it has been limited to a theater network of 60 to 80. While there have been previous films that started their release in around 10 theaters, then gained traction and expanded to over 150 theaters, becoming huge hits, this is the first time in Japan that a film has surpassed 2 billion yen in its opening day with fewer than 100 theaters.
A revival screening of the film has been held at 66 cinemas nationwide since September 2nd, the 8th anniversary of the "Hypnosis Mic" project. To commemorate its huge success, the video "Claim Victory (Immersive Edition)" is available on YouTube for a limited time until September 7th.
"Hypnosis Mic" is a project launched in September 2017 in which cast members sing rap as characters. The rappers are divided into teams based on divisions: Shinjuku, Yokohama, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Osaka, and Nagoya. The project has been adapted into a media mix, including comics, games, and stage plays. The first season of the TV anime aired from October to December 2020, and the second season aired from October to December 2023.
