NHK's popular nature program "Darwin's Coming!" (General) will broadcast "Gathering Animals in Herds" from 7:30 pm on August 31st. There are various reasons why animals form groups, such as for self-protection or to foster love. The program will uncover the "secrets of herd formation" through carefully selected, treasured footage.
This time, we will introduce a carefully selected collection of special footage of creatures that live in groups.
The film also uncovers the surprising behaviors of "swarms" around the world, such as the evasive techniques used by hundreds of millions of sardines to evade predators, the "heat-killing bee ball" technique used by hundreds of Japanese honeybees to swarm an attacking Asian giant hornet and steam it to death with their body heat, the mass gathering of reindeer, and the mass jumping of rays.
