The MANTANWEB editorial team has picked out some recommended films to enjoy in an air-conditioned theater during the summer holidays. We will introduce the film "Haunted Property Zoku: Scary Floor Plans" (directed by Hideo Nakata ), starring Shota Watanabe of the popular group "Snow Man."
The original work is the "Haunted Property Ghost Stories: Scary Floor Plans" series (Futami Shobo) by comedian Matsubara Tanishi, who actually lives in haunted properties. A film adaptation of the same name, starring Kamenashi Kazuya, was released in 2020. Following on from the previous film, this film is directed by Nakata, who led the Japanese horror boom with "Ring" (1998).
Unable to give up on his childhood dream of becoming a celebrity, Kuwata Yahiro (Watanabe) moves to Tokyo from Fukuoka. He visits a talent agency in Tokyo, and after hearing a word from the company president, Fujiyoshi Kiyoshi ( Kotaro Yoshida), he begins working as a celebrity living in haunted properties. The story follows him as he travels from one haunted property to another, searching for material to uncover the mysteries hidden in the properties, including a room that is sure to be haunted, an old inn with a bad reputation, and a shared house where spirits appear. The heroine, Haruhara Karin, is played by Mei Hata.
As you'd expect from director Nakata, the horror scenes are chilling, but some people say they are surprisingly moving.
