69-year-old singer Kenji Niinuma will appear on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi), which will be broadcast at 1:00 p.m. on August 6th.
At the age of 20, he had a huge hit with "Will You Come With Me?", and this year marks the 50th anniversary of his debut. At the time of his debut, he was so popular that he didn't take a single day off for two years, and he received fan mail from all over the country. Before becoming a singer, he worked as a plasterer, and says that thanks to his friends at that time, he was able to memorize many old songs.
Ten years after he asked, "Will you marry me?", he got married. His wife is a former badminton player, and their wedding ceremony was held in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, Niinuma's hometown. The town was filled with a celebratory mood and the atmosphere was very lively. He is now a grandfather to two grandchildren, and his grandson, who is in the third grade of elementary school, says he wants to become an airplane mechanic. While he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, he also feels growing fondness for his wife, who passed away in 2011.
