The second part of NHK's "Century of Images: High Definition Special 'Europe 2077 Days of Hell'" entitled "Part 2: The German-Soviet War and Tragedy of Ukraine 1941-1943" will be broadcast on NHK General TV from 10pm on July 28th. It depicts the tragedy of Ukraine, a country that was twice reduced to ashes as it became a battlefield between Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II.
Ukraine, which was the main battlefield of the German-Soviet War, where Hitler and Stalin clashed, was reduced to ashes twice in just two years. Three months after the start of the war, German troops occupied the capital Kyiv, and the Soviet army destroyed Ukrainian cities to slow down the German advance. Two years later, the Soviet army recaptured Kyiv, and the German army destroyed the city as it retreated. More than 8 million people, 20% of the population, were killed in Ukraine during World War II. It was the Ukrainian people who paid the price for the war between the two dictators. Watching the colorized archive footage from that time, the situation in Ukraine today seems to overlap.
"Part 1: The German People Became Accomplices 1939-1940," which aired on July 21, is scheduled to be rebroadcast on NHK General TV from 11:50 pm on July 31. "Part 3: The Dictator Who Took His People Down with Him 1944-1945," which will be broadcast from 10 pm on August 4, will relive in video footage how Hitler missed the timing of the ceasefire and took the German people down the road to collapse.
