It has been revealed that the new movie version of the popular anime "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", "Puella Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten", will be released in February 2026. The new movie version was scheduled to be released in winter 2024, but was postponed and announced to be released in winter 2025.
"Puella Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten" is the "legitimate sequel" to "Puella Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Part 3: Rebellion," which was released in October 2013. It will be the first time in about 12 years that a new movie version of the series will be released. The staff, including general director Akiyuki Shinbo and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi, will be reuniting.
The second key visual and trailer for the new movie have been released. The trailer features Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, and Mami Tomoe. Movie ticket cards using the second key visual will be on sale at theaters from July 18th.
It was also announced that "Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Beginning/The Eternal Story TV Edition" will be broadcast on the MBS/TBS Sunday 5pm anime slot starting in October. "Puella Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Part 1 - The Beginning" and " Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Part 2 - The Eternal Story," which were released in 2012, will be re-arranged and broadcast as a "TV Edition." Details such as the first broadcast date will be announced at a later date.
"Puella Magi Madoka Magica" is an original anime that depicts magical girls who are burdened with harsh destinies, and was broadcast on TV in 2011. It was directed by Shinbo and produced by Shaft. It brought together a stellar cast of staff, including Ume Aoki as the original character designer, Urobuchi as the scriptwriter, and Yuki Kajiura as the composer. Although the visuals are heartwarming, the profound world setting and dramatic developments made it popular.
The film versions, "Part 1: The Beginning" and "Part 2: The Eternal Story," which were re-edited versions of the TV series, were released in 2012. "Part 3: Rebellion," released in 2013, was the first late-night anime film to surpass 2 billion yen in box office revenue. The first season of the TV anime "Magia Record : Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story," based on a smartphone game, aired from January to March 2020, the second season from August to September 2021, and the "Final Season" in April 2022.
