NHK's popular nature program "Darwin Has Come!" (General) will feature newts, amphibians that live near water such as rice fields, on July 13th in a segment titled "Cute and Super Cute! A Close Observation of Newts."
In this program, we will look into the unknown and amazing power of newts. Newts have an incredibly long lifespan. Their secret is their ability to regenerate even lost legs, and their ability to protect themselves by making full use of smell and poison. This time, we succeeded in filming the decisive moment.
We also come across a very rare large gathering of "newt balls". A thorough observation reveals their tough side, which continues to live even in the winter when they are normally inactive. We also get a close look at the careful egg-laying process, wrapping each egg in a leaf. We also attempt to unravel the mysterious growth process!
