Naruse walked through the streets of Kamakura with Chiaki (Koizumi). Chiaki told him, "I like the look on your face when you talk about your (deceased) wife. I get the feeling that you really loved her." Naruse felt a sense of foreboding.
"Well then, I guess I have to give up on this new love after all. I'll give up. I'll give up. I'll stop loving you any more. Because I'm an adult. No, I'm a Kamakura boy."
Then, as if convincing himself, Naruse said, "No, I think it's because I would be punished... I met my wife, we were able to get married, and we were able to spend the happiest time together as a couple. So if I asked for more, I would be punished, I'm sure."
He concluded by saying, "But please stay friends with me, forever in Kamakura."
On social media, comments were posted such as, "It's so mature and cool to end a relationship in a way that doesn't make the other person feel bad," "Naruse-sensei's reason for giving up is because he's an adult, a Kamakura boy....He's such a gentleman to the end, and so cool," "His love with Chiaki ended in heartbreak, but I think that by having his heart moved, he was able to realize that even at his age, he can still think and worry about things and move forward," and "I hope Naruse-sensei finds happiness."
