Last year, when the size of her breasts started to differ from each other, she wondered if this was a symptom of her menopause, but when she consulted her daughter, who lives in the United States, she was told that something was clearly wrong and she was urged to go to the hospital. After an examination, she was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma, a rare cancer. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor, as well as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
His father, the actor Tatsuo Umemiya, who passed away in 2019, was also diagnosed with cancer in his 30s and fought the disease, so he was prepared for the same to happen someday. Although it is a rare cancer, there is an established treatment, and although the side effects and post-surgery rehabilitation were tough, he says he was able to fight the disease with a positive attitude.
Her American mother, Claudia, was very worried and always accompanied her, but she couldn't understand difficult Japanese, such as medical terminology, and this made her feel that she had to be strong herself. She says that this sense of responsibility became her support. Her daughter, who had been working in the US, quit her job and returned to Japan, saying that she would stay by her side. Although she felt sorry for her daughter, who had finally become independent and started her own life, she felt truly reassured.
