"Time-Traveling TV: The One You Want to Watch Now!" (General TV, Fridays at 10:30 pm) is a program that introduces masterpieces carefully selected from the NHK Archives. On May 16th, they will be covering the NHK special "My Okinawa: Gushiken Yoko and His Family," which was first broadcast on October 22nd, 1979.
This film chronicles the achievements of Yoko Gushiken, the first Okinawa-born boxing world champion, and the century-old history of his family who have supported him.
The Gushiken clan, who cheer enthusiastically on his matches, once served the Ryukyu Dynasty, but fell into decline when the Meiji government abolished the feudal domains and established prefectures, and were scattered across the islands of Okinawa. They went on to work abroad, went to war, and were occupied by the US military. With scenes of Gushiken training for his ninth title defense, the film depicts the path Okinawa has walked and the feelings of its people through the strong-knit family.
Gushiken will also be a guest on the show.
