A screening of the third chapter of the latest installment of the remake series of the popular anime "Space Battleship Yamato", "Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199", "Gunjou no Asteroid", entitled "YamaTalk Screening [Mecha Design Edition]", was held on May 8th at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo). Mechanical designer Tamamori Junichiro, general director Fukui Harutoshi, director Yamato Naomichi, and scriptwriter Oka Hideki appeared on stage. This was Tamamori's first appearance at YamaTalk in about six and a half years. Setting drawings of the Arizona were shown for the first time, and the design secrets of the omnidirectional radar room and Yamato were revealed.
The spherical radar room, which also appeared in "Be Forever Yamato," has also been a hot topic as it first appeared in the remake series in the third chapter of "3199." Tamamori, who has been involved in the remake series since "Space Battleship Yamato 2199," said he was in charge of thinking up the concept and size, and when asked where on Yamato it is located, he explained, "It runs through the fifth and sixth decks. We had left the space open in 2199. If we were to place the spherical radar room, this would be the place. We had no choice but to do it if we wanted to respect the original."
Tamamori has been in charge of Yamato's design since "2199." For "3199," Fukui said, "I was particular about the anchor mark on the bow. If it was painted it would look small. By making it a relief, the face of Yamato in 3199 could be seen." Tamamori said, "I wanted it to look powerful, so I suggested making it a relief. I had the image of the school emblem on a student cap in mind."
When the topic turned to the Type 5 Spatial Mobile Armor, Tamamori said, "It is based on the image of Saito Hajime, and is also called the Saito Style. Saito's spirit remains, and Saito is protecting it. Those are the thoughts that went into it."
Fukui praised Tamamori, saying, "Mecha designers have an incredible ability to grasp space. Among them, Hajime Katoki and Tamamori stand out above the rest. There are no breakdowns in the lines."
"Yamato 3199" is a new interpretation of the third theatrical film, "Be Forever Yamato," released in 1980. Fukui will serve as general director, and will also be in charge of series composition and scriptwriting. Fukui was in charge of series composition and scriptwriting for the remake series "Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love" and "Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage," and will also be general director for the latest film. There are seven chapters in total, with the fourth chapter, "Sasha, the Light Blue Maiden," set to premiere on October 10.
The first Space Battleship Yamato anime series was broadcast in 1974, and other films have since been produced, including Space Battleship Yamato 2, Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato , Warriors of Love, and Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection. A remake of the first film, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, was screened in theaters and broadcast on TV from 2012 to 2014, and a sequel to 2199, 2202, was screened in theaters and broadcast on TV from 2017 to 2019. A two-part series, 2205, was screened in theaters in 2021 and 2022.
