It has been announced that the full-CG animation "FINAL FANTASY," released in 2001 as a feature-length animated film from the popular RPG "FINAL FANTASY" series, will be screened at the 3rd Niigata International Animation Film Festival, a festival for full-length commercial animated films. It will be screened as part of the all-night event "A Turning Point for Japanese Anime CG."
The film was directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the "FINAL FANTASY" series. It was produced with the cooperation of Japan and the United States, using cutting-edge staff and technology at the time. Set in the year 2065, on Earth, which has been attacked by extraterrestrial life forms, the film depicts the female scientist Aki and others facing the final phase of humanity.
The "Turning Point in Japanese Anime CG" section will screen films including "Knights of Sidonia the Movie" (directed by Shizuno Kobun) and "Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos" (directed by Murata Kazuya), as well as the French documentary "Bones 25_Dreaming Forwards" (directed by Jas), which follows the 25-year history of anime production studio Bones.
The festival aims to be one of the largest festivals in Asia with a competition category for feature-length animated films, with the aim of spreading anime culture from Niigata to the world. The first festival was held in Niigata City from March 17 to 22, 2023, and the second from March 15 to 20, 2024. The third festival will be held from March 15 to 20.
