On December 23rd, it was revealed that director Mamoru Hosoda, known for his animated feature films such as "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," "Summer Wars," and "The Dragon and the Freckled Princess," will be producing his first new animated feature film in about four years. The film will be titled "Endless Scarlet" and will be released in winter 2025. The new film will be written and based on an original story by Hosoda, and will tell the story of a princess from a certain country who travels through a harsh world. A teaser visual featuring the main character, Princess Scarlett, has been released.
The announcement was made at a production briefing held at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) on the same day. As a new initiative, the new film will be distributed worldwide by Toho and Sony Pictures. Toho will be responsible for distribution in Japan, while Sony Pictures will be responsible for distribution in countries and regions around the world other than Japan.
Director Hosoda, who appeared at the briefing, revealed that the new work will be a challenging one, saying, "It will depict the biggest theme of my previous works. I want to express in the film the feelings that are common to all people, universal, and that everyone has. I will tackle a theme that is unrelated to everyone in the world." Regarding the title, "Endless Scarlet," he explained, "It will be a work that transcends time and space. When I think of transcending time and space, the word 'endless' comes to mind."
