The TV Asahi popular program "Watanabe Atsushi's Building Exploration" (Saturday 4:25 am), in which actor Watanabe Atsushi serves as the host and introduces unique homes, has celebrated its 35th anniversary. As of the end of December, 1,827 homes have been visited. Watanabe, who was 41 when the program first aired in April 1989, turned 77 last month. Regarding his feelings about the 35th anniversary, Watanabe said, "My feelings about the program haven't changed since it started. I've never been happier in my life to have been able to continue this far. I didn't make it to the 35th anniversary by myself. I think we were able to reach the 35th anniversary because everyone involved in the program made it a success. I'm really grateful."
When the show first began, it featured famous architecture from around the country, mainly public facilities such as schools and city halls, but gradually it evolved into a show that specializes in introducing private homes. "I've always loved architecture. I've been collecting and reading architecture magazines since I was in my twenties," says Watanabe. "I asked the producer at the time if I could introduce an ordinary house designed by an architect, and that's how the show evolved into the current one that introduces private homes."
When asked about the secret to his 35 years of success, he replied, "Safety is a great horse." He reflected, "It's the result of focusing on what's in front of me. I think I've been able to continue for 35 years because I love my home."
When asked about the future of the program, he enthusiastically stated, "We have been running this for 35 years with the belief that 'architecture is freedom, home building is freedom.' Every home has a story. I would like to feel the whole story at every place we visit. I would like to continue to introduce great architecture in the future! Architecture is freedom! I'll do my best!"
To commemorate the 35th anniversary, a one-hour special "Watanabe Atsushi's Building Exploration Celebration! 35th Anniversary New Year Special" will be broadcast on January 4th next year at 6:00 AM. The show will explore two homes that realize the couple's unique lifestyle. Guests include Iio Kazuki of the comedy duo "Zun," who is a fan of the show, and freelance announcer Uga Natsumi. Secret footage from the past 35 years will also be shown.
