It has been announced that Makoto Kudo's manga "My Awkward Senpai," currently being serialized in the manga magazine "Young Gangan" (Square Enix), will be adapted into a TV anime in 2025. It is a romantic comedy depicting the daily lives of the clumsy and often misunderstood older boss, Kannawa Azusa, and the earnest new employee, Kamekawa Yuu. It has also been announced that voice actress Lynn will play Kannawa Azusa.
The anime will be directed by Ayumu Kodake, with series composition and scriptwriting by Mio Inoue, character design by Kenro Tokuda, and music by Kouji Fujimoto. It will be produced by Studio L. A teaser visual and promotional video featuring Azusa Kannawa with the catchphrase "I can't be honest, but I have feelings I want to convey" have been released.
Lynn said, "I am very happy to be playing the clumsy senior, Tetsuwan Azusa. I can empathize with her a lot, as she is not good at communicating, and I often find myself nodding in agreement. But Tetsuwan is also very cute. That's because she speaks in a dialect! The gap between her work mode and her real self is irresistible! It's tough, like a roller coaster of emotions, but I will do my best in my own clumsy way, so I hope you will support me."
Original author Kudo, contributed a newly drawn illustration, commenting, "It's being made into an anime. This is quite a feat. I owe it all to everyone who has been reading it since it was posted on SNS and since it began serialization in Young Gangan. I'm a person who can only draw, so I basically leave the production to them. After all, I leave it to the experts. Above all, the voice actors and production staff are all wonderful, so I feel like a parent seeing them off and saying, 'Please support my children.' I hope that everyone will look forward to the anime 'Bukiyou na Senpai.' in the same way."
The series is popular, with a total of 550,000 copies of the comics published and over 3 million likes on Twitter. The story revolves around Azusa Kanawa, an office worker whose reputation within the company is that she's "pretty, but strict, scary, and tough," and who is appointed as the mentor for new employee Yuu Kamekawa. Eight volumes of the comics have been released.
