The eighth episode of the TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea" (Sundays at 9pm), starring actor Ryunosuke Kamiki, will be broadcast on December 15th. The story takes a sudden turn in the eighth episode, and producer Junko Arai said, "I think some people will want to scream."
The drama is a story of love, friendship and family spanning 70 years, set on the island of Hashima (Gunkanjima) in Nagasaki Prefecture, which developed through coal mining from the beginning of the Meiji era to the postwar high economic growth period, and in modern-day Tokyo. It is written by Akiko Nogi, directed by Ayuko Tsukahara, and produced by Junko Arai, the team behind the dramas "Unnatural" and "MIU404" (same series) and the movie "The Last Mile."
Episode 8 is... 1964. Four months have passed since the mine was closed on Hashima Island after an explosion could not be prevented. Many of the miners have left the island, and those who remain are beginning to lose hope. Even in the Araki family, years of strain have taken their toll, and Ippei (Kunimura Jun) falls ill. Nevertheless, Teppei (Kamiki) works hard to develop a new area with undeveloped coal seams and somehow revive the island.
Teppei and Asako (Hana Sugisaki) go on a date to Nagasaki for the first time in a long time, avoiding the attention of others. The two have built a good relationship, but there are also bad rumors about Teppei.
A modern-day hospital. Izumi (Miyamoto Nobuko) is taking a dementia test at Kazuma's (Omi Toshinori) suggestion. Izumi's secretary Sawada (Sakamichi Yoshi) keeps a close eye on Kazuma, suspecting that he is up to no good. In order to trace Teppei's whereabouts, Reo (Kamiki, in a dual role) is searching through Hashima's archives and documents at an auction when a host from the host club where Teppei used to work comes to see him... and so the story unfolds.
Regarding episode 8, Arai said, "Episode 8 is about time that had stopped starting to move again. How will Reo in the present act in response to Teppei's feelings from the past? The story then takes a sudden turn...! I think some people will find themselves wanting to scream. Watch and look forward to the new character who holds the key to the story!"
