It has been announced that the TV anime series "Chuzenji Sensei's Monster Lectures: The Teacher Solves the Mystery" based on a spin-off manga that depicts the prequel to Kyogoku Natsuhiko's popular novel "The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons Series" will begin airing in April 2025. The main cast has also been announced, with voice actress Maeda Kaori playing the protagonist, female student Kusakabe Shiori. It has also been announced that Katsuyuki Konishi will play the role of Chuzenji Akihiko, aka Kyogokudo, when he was a high school teacher.
Maeda commented, "The story is told from Shiori's perspective as Professor Nakasenji solves the mystery, but there are also moments that will make you chuckle and give you chills, and I think it's a work that will easily fit into everyone's everyday lives and be enjoyable! As it is set in the Showa era, I hope you will also enjoy the retro Showa world view! Look forward to it!"
Konishi said, "Hello everyone. It's Konishi. I never thought the day would come when I would be able to play the famous Nakazenji Akihiko. I'm so nervous I'm shaking. I'm familiar with the Kyogokudo series and so I feel a lot of responsibility and pressure. I'm looking forward to seeing how the atmosphere of Nakazenji-sensei is portrayed in the anime. The first key visual, featuring Kusakabe Kana and Nakazenji Akihiko against the backdrop of a Showa-era second-hand bookstore, as well as a teaser PV offering a glimpse of the "mystery" that appears in the work have also been released.
The manga, illustrated by Aki Shimizu and written by Hanzō Tamura, began serialization in 2019 in Shonen Magazine Edge (Kodansha, currently out of print) and moved to the web manga service Comic Days (Kodansha) in 2023. It is a prequel to the series, depicting the high school teacher days of Akihiko Nakazenji, otherwise known as Kyogokudō from the Hyakki Yagyo series, and follows female student Kana Kusakabe and Akihiko Nakazenji as they confront various incidents involving supernatural phenomena. The anime will be directed by Chihiro Kumano and produced by 100studio.
