Actor Junichi Okada will appear in the documentary "Tatara no Kuni Okuizumo" (BSS Sanin Broadcasting/TBS, January 18, 2025, 4:00 pm), which takes viewers on a journey through the world's only "Tatara ironworking" town, Okuizumo, Shimane. The film explores the roots of Japan's "manufacturing" tradition that has been passed down for 1,000 years.
"Tatara ironmaking" is an ancient Japanese technique of producing iron by hand using only natural materials from the forest - iron sand, charcoal, and clay - and Okuizumo in Shimane is the only place where it is still in operation. As the finest steel "tamahagane", the raw material for Japanese swords, can only be produced by "tatara", craftsmen currently only operate the mill during the winter each year in order to supply tamahagane and pass on the traditional techniques.
This time, Okada was given special permission to enter the operation site, which is usually closed to the public, and conducted an interview. He also touches on the history and culture of Okuizumo and learns the secrets of the town that has grown alongside "Tatara".
Okada commented, "Through this program, I learned that Okuizumo's 'Tatara' is not only used for making iron, but is also connected to many other things, such as nature and food. I believe that in the work and wisdom of our ancestors who lived with the tatara, there are important hints for us to live in the future. I would be happy if this program could be an opportunity for many people to learn about this culture in their country." He also said, "How are the real swords that I use when performing as an actor made? I was able to witness the moment when tamahagane is produced, learn the thoughts of the craftsmen, and have a valuable experience that I can use in my future role-making."
"Tatara no Kuni Okuizumo" is the winner of the "JNN Planning Award" by 28 JNN (TBS) affiliated stations. This is the second time that Sanin Broadcasting has produced a program, following "Island Hotel that Creates the Future" in 2022. After the broadcast, it will also be available for catch-up streaming on TVer.
