In episode 5... In the present day, the results of a DNA test arrive at Izumi's (Miyamoto Nobuko) house. Are Izumi and Reo (Kamiki) related by blood? The truth is revealed one after another. Who is Izumi living in 2018...?
December 1958. In accordance with the wishes of the All Japan Coal Mine Workers' Union, Ippei (Kunimura Jun), Shinpei (Saito Takumi) and other miners were planning a "partial strike" to demand a pay raise for their end-of-year bonuses. However, Teppei and the Takaha Mining Company side rejected the miners' demands and implemented a lockout of the mine. When they are locked out, they cannot receive wages and the miners are in financial difficulty.
Finding himself in an unfortunate situation where he is at odds with his father, brother, and the miners whom he considers to be family, Teppei begins to question the structure of the labor union system. Among the miners, there is widespread dissatisfaction with the mine manager Tatsuo (Sawamura Kazuki), who has chosen to lock them out. Meanwhile, Rina (Ikeda Elaiza) begins to tell Shinpei about her own sad past... and so the story unfolds.
The drama is a story of love, friendship, and family spanning 70 years, set on Hashima Island (Gunkanjima) in Nagasaki Prefecture, which developed through coal mining from the beginning of the Meiji era to the postwar period of high economic growth, and in modern-day Tokyo. It is written by Nogi Akiko, directed by Tsukahara Ayuko, and produced by the team behind the dramas "Unnatural" and "MIU404" (same series) and the film "The Last Mile."
