It has been announced that voice actors Fukushi Ochiai, Banjo Ginga, and Mayumi Tanaka will appear in the new animated feature film "The Rose of Versailles" (directed by Ai Yoshimura, scheduled for release on January 31, 2025), based on the classic manga by Riyoko Ikeda. Ochiai will play Louis XVI, the grandson of Louis XV and husband of Marie Antoinette; Ginga will play General Jarjayes, Oscar's father and loyal to the French royal family; and Tanaka will play Maron Glacée Montblanc, Andre's grandmother and Oscar's wet nurse.
Ochiai said, "When I was in elementary school, the kid sitting next to me was reading The Rose of Versailles during recess, and I remember him lending it to me to read. When I picked up the script and started reading, nostalgic memories came flooding back. I am very honored to be able to breathe life into the film as Louis XVI."
Ginga commented, "I am almost the same generation as Ikeda Riyoko, the author of the timeless masterpiece The Rose of Versailles. Even though I had no connection to her, I always lived my life proud of her. Time has passed, and now the animated film version of The Rose of Versailles is going to be released. Now that I have a slight connection to her, I am overjoyed and feel so proud. But... well, well, if you think about it, it was all my fault. Sorry Oscar."
Tanaka said, "I play Maron, Rascal's wet nurse, who is supposed to do a lot of laundry. Rascal is supposed to be the one doing the washing... but it's Oscar! It's a rare female role for me (laughs). Please look forward to it."
The Rose of Versailles is a masterpiece manga by Ikeda that was serialized in Weekly Margaret (Shueisha) from 1972 to 1973. Set during the French Revolution in the late 18th century, the film beautifully depicts the love and life of Oscar, a beautiful woman who dresses as a man, and Marie Antoinette, the innocent queen who came to France from neighboring Austria as a bride.
The animated film will be directed by Yoshimura, who has worked on Ao Haru Ride and Cheer Boys!!, among others. Sawano Hiroyuki, who has worked on Attack on Titan, will serve as music producer, and Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto will be in charge of the music. It will be produced by MAPPA, known for Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.
