The 53rd episode of the NHK Asadora drama "Bakebake " (General TV, Monday to Saturday 8:00 AM and other times), starring Akari Takaishi, was broadcast on December 10th. In this episode, Heaven's ( Tommy Bastow) past was revealed, which became a hot topic among viewers.
In episode 53, Toki (Takaishi) becomes uneasy when he hears that Rio (Kana Kita) is going to propose to Heaven. Meanwhile, at the recovery party, Rio is about to confess her feelings to Heaven. Upon learning of Rio's feelings for him, Heaven begins to tell him that she wants to hear about her past before giving him an answer.
Haven was born in Greece and soon moved to Ireland, where her aunt lives. She later lived in London and France, then went to the United States and moved around the country before finally arriving in Matsue. When Haven explained that this was her fate, unable to settle down, Rio told her she could stay in Matsue. But Haven replied, "I'm scared... I can't do it!", confiding that something bad would happen and she would fail, leaving her with neither a place to belong nor anyone to live with.
When Rio countered that she wouldn't know until she tried, Heaven replied, "I did it." She revealed that she had been with a woman in the United States in the past.
Haven, who became a newspaper reporter in Cincinnati, Ohio, meets a maid named Martha (Misha Brooks) at the apartment where she is staying and the two are attracted to each other. The two eventually start living together. Haven's career is going well, and she has even won a Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association award. She recalls, "When I started living with Martha, I felt fulfilled, and my life and work were going well. I even felt like these days would last forever."
Feeling that he had finally found his place in the world, Haven proposed to Martha. However, at the time, interracial marriage was prohibited in Ohio, and Martha, who has black roots, replied, "I'm happy, but I can't do that." Haven remained true to his love, saying, "It doesn't matter," and the two had a wedding ceremony. The pastor assured them, "I hate to say this one last time, but you can still turn back now," but Haven held Martha's hand and said, "It's okay," pledging their eternal love.
Looking back on her feelings at the time, Heaven said, "I had no regrets. On the contrary, I was filled with hope and happiness."
On social media, people were saying things like, "Even the pastor is against it...", "That's not the woman in the photo he treasures... What does that mean? What happened after that...", "I wonder if the reason Heaven is interested in her maid, Toki, is because she has something in common with Martha?" and "She's someone who overcomes racism and prejudice to try to make her love come true. We can see the seeds of her later union with Toki here."
Also, in the fourth episode (broadcast on October 2nd), Heaven, who has lost her job as a newspaper reporter and is on the verge of starvation, mutters to herself, "Money, bread, family. I have had no connection to any of these things in my life. I don't even have a single friend in my life who will read this will," and holds a gun to her temple.
Many viewers remembered this scene, with comments such as, "Was this the reason Heaven was so heartbroken in the first week?", "I wonder if things didn't go well and that led to her attempted suicide with a pistol at the beginning," and "I wonder if this is connected to Heaven's attempted suicide with a pistol in the first week... She looks like she's going to be in pain tomorrow..."
