NHK's drama "The Man Who Carries the Voice of August" (General), starring actor Masahiro Motoki , will air on August 13th at 10:00 PM. Based on the true story of journalist Akihiko Ito, who lived in Nagasaki and traveled all over Japan to gather the voices of atomic bomb survivors, the drama tells the story of a strange encounter brought about by the atomic bombing. The drama is written by Shunsaku Ikebata, a screenwriter from Hiroshima Prefecture known for his historical dramas "Taiheiki" (1991) and "Kirin ga Kuru" (2020), and is a drama commemorating 80 years since the end of the war.
Sadao Abe Masahiro Motoki will play Kuno Wahei, a man who recounts the unforgettable experiences of atomic bomb survivors to journalist Tsujihara Tamotsu, played by Motoki Masahiro, while Ito Aoi will play Kuno's sister, Shizuka Ishibashi, Ono Machiko will play Machiko Ono, and Tetsushi Tanaka.
The story is set in Japan in 1972, a time of rapid economic growth. It is no longer the post-war era. Every Japanese person is striving for prosperity. As if going against the trend of the times, Tsujihara Tamotsu (Motoki), a journalist from a broadcasting station in Nagasaki, begins to collect the voices of atomic bomb survivors. However, at the time, the damage caused by the atomic bomb was still fresh, and the experiences of atomic bomb survivors were not something that should be spoken of in the first place. Recording the experiences of atomic bomb survivors in such an era was a "lonely" and harsh task that was not understood by those around them.
During this time, Tsujihara has a fateful encounter with a survivor of the atomic bombing, Kuno Wahei (played by Abe). Tsujihara is deeply moved by the "voice" Kuno speaks. He wants to convey this "voice." However, this "voice" is also shrouded in many mysteries...
