NHK's program "Heroes' Choices," which focuses on heroes who made decisions that changed history, will broadcast "Hiraga Gennai, the multi-creator who ran through Edo" on NHK BS from 9:00 pm on February 10th. Hiraga Gennai was a talk of Edo with his extraordinary talent. He was active in a wide range of fields, including invention, novels, painting, and advertising, but his starting point was botany, or what we would now call natural history. He solicited submissions of rare products from all over the country and produced Japan's first nationwide exposition, but Gennai was a ronin who had run away from his hometown of Takamatsu Domain. He had big dreams, but he always struggled to raise funds and ended up with huge debts.
