The variety show "Kaiun! Nandemo Kanteidan" (TV Tokyo, Tuesdays at 8:54 PM), hosted by talent Koji Imada, freelance announcer Akira Fukuzawa, and former Sakurazaka46 member Yuka Sugai, featured a mysterious gemstone that changes color when light is shone on it as a "treasure" on June 16th.
The treasures were two alexandrite rings that the client had impulsively bought about 40 years ago. He happened to be browsing in a clothing store when the shop owner showed them to him, saying, "These clothes are nice, but how about these?" He was so captivated by their sparkle that he couldn't resist and bought them for 1 million yen.
This gave him momentum, and he went to another store and bought another alexandrite ring for 1 million yen. He doesn't regret the impulse purchase, but he wanted to know its current value.
The owner valued the item at 2 million yen, the purchase price, but the appraisal result was slightly lower at 1.8 million yen. Appraiser Koichi Iida explained, "One is a natural stone, and the other is synthetic. Alexandrite is most valuable when its color changes clearly. The synthetic stone was incredibly bright. It had fewer impurities. If it were a natural alexandrite, I think it could have been worth 20 million yen."
