Singer Sachiko Kobayashi, who turned 72, appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on May 6th, and revealed how she came to be known by the nickname "Last Boss."
Ms. Kobayashi has the nickname "the final boss of the music world." When Tetsuko asked her, "Are you the final boss?", she explained, "It's not that I'm the final boss, but rather that the large costumes I wear at Kohaku (NHK's New Year's Eve music show) resemble those of the final boss. So, on the internet, for over 20 years now, people have been saying 'the final boss = Sachiko Kobayashi.' I didn't know that either."
The program showed footage of Kobayashi appearing "giant" on stage due to her costume. She explained her reasoning, saying, "I thought I'd try to make the 'final boss' a little stronger, especially for all the people on the internet who have kindly nicknamed me 'final boss'."
Seeing Ms. Kobayashi appear in her usual flamboyant outfit that day, Tetsuko said, "You have to shine this much, don't you?" Ms. Kobayashi playfully replied, "My mentor, Professor Masao Koga, once told me that 'shiny things ward off evil.' I wonder if this is also a charm against evil?"
