It was announced on April 15th that a new short anime will be produced to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the "Future GPX Cyber Formula" anime series, which was popular mainly in the 1990s. More than 25 years have passed since the release of the final volume of the fourth OVA (Original Video Animation), "Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN," in March 2000, and now a legitimate sequel is being produced. According to series director Mitsuo Fukuda, the new short anime will "condense a new year for Cyber Formula into six minutes." Further details, such as the release date, will be announced in the future.
Fukuda explained the new work, saying, "This video is a short animation delivered in a very short timeframe of about 6 minutes. However, it condenses 'a new year for Cyber Formula' into it. With the density and speed that can only be depicted because of the limited time, we have captured the present state of this world. In terms of story, it is a legitimate sequel to 'SIN'. It depicts what lies beyond that battle, the new season that the characters will face, and a part of its beginning and changes. In production, we have had staff who have worked on this series in the past, as well as a new generation of creators who have been touched by and influenced by previous works, participate. It became a workplace where feelings that have been passed down through generations and new sensibilities intersect."
"In this work, we have reviewed and rebuilt various settings from scratch, including the race regulations and designs. Building upon what we have accumulated so far, we have challenged ourselves to create a new image of Cyber Formula by reconstructing it as a modern expression. And in terms of visuals, we have not used any CG, from the characters to the Cyber Machines, and have created everything with full hand-drawn animation. We hope you will feel the sense of speed and weight that can only be created by hand-drawing, and the feeling of the 'running' itself. It is a short work, but the passion we have poured into each and every moment is the same as before. Please come and witness the start of a new year," he said.
The design for the Zenith Asurada AKF-S0/G, a completely new cyber machine designed by Shoji Kawamori, who is in charge of machine design, was also unveiled for the first time. This machine is scheduled to appear in a new short anime and will be commercialized in MegaHouse's "Variable Action Hi-SPEC" and "CFC-Heritage Edition" series.
A 35th-anniversary visual drawn by Takahiro Yoshimatsu, who was in charge of character design and animation direction for the TV series, and a memorial promotional video focusing on the four OVA series were released. It was also announced that a new game, "Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral," will be released by PROJECT YNP.
"Future GPX Cyber Formula" is an anime that depicts the growth of Hayato Kazami as he participates in motorsports incorporating cutting-edge technology and races. The 37-episode TV anime aired in 1991, followed by four OVAs: "Future GPX Cyber Formula 11" in 1992, "Future GPX Cyber Formula ZERO" in 1994, "Future GPX Cyber Formula SAGA" in 1996, and "Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN" in 1998.
