The 13th and final episode of the TV anime "The Darwin Incident," based on the manga by Shun Umezawa, which was also the grand prize winner of the "Manga Taisho 2022," aired late at night on March 31st, revealing the existence of another humanzee, Omelas. Dr. Sarah Yuan, one of the few people who knows about Omelas's existence, also appeared, and the story surrounding Charlie and Lucy ended in chaos. It was also revealed that Takuya Sato voiced Omelas and Ami Koshimizu voiced Dr. Sarah Yuan. Sato also provided the narration at the beginning of the first episode, thus taking on the roles of both Omelas and narrator.
Sato commented, "I provided the narration for the first episode and voiced Omelas in the final episode. When I read the original manga before auditioning for this project, I was instantly hooked. I'm curious to see what happens next in the original story, but the anime is just getting started. I look forward to meeting everyone again as the voice of Omelas."
Koshimizu said, "The final episode leaves us with an unsettling feeling that the story will start moving in a new direction from here. What did you think? I am grateful to have been entrusted with a role that makes its first appearance in the final episode, but I also felt some pressure while recording. I would be happy if it was a drop that gives you something to think about regarding what will happen next."
"The Darwin Incident" has been serialized in "Afternoon" (Kodansha) since 2020. Charlie, a "humanzee" born from the union of a human and a chimpanzee, confronts problems faced by "humans" such as terrorism, online firestorms, and discrimination. The series has sold over 2.2 million copies in total.
The anime was directed by Naokatsu Tsuda and produced by Vernox Films. Atsumi Tanezaki voiced Lucy Eldred, whom Charlie meets when he enters school; and Mitsuho Kanbe Akio Otsuka voiced Rivera Feyerabend. The series began airing on TV Tokyo in January and concluded with its final episode on the night of March 31st.
