It was revealed on January 18th that Matsuyama Kenichi will be playing the "pre-reboot" version of the main character played by actor Suzuki Ryohei in the TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Reboot" (Sundays at 9pm). This was a surprise announcement in the first episode aired on the same day, and surprisingly, this is the first time the two have appeared together in a full-scale production.
The story is an extreme family suspense drama in which Hayase Riku, an ordinary pastry chef framed for the murder of his wife, abandons his beloved family and past and transforms (reboots) into the persona of Gido, a corrupt detective at the Metropolitan Police Department, in order to prove his innocence and find the real culprit. The script is written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who has worked on many hit Sunday Theatre shows such as "Grand Maison Tokyo," "TOKYO MER: Running Emergency Room," and "My Family."
Matsuyama will play Hayase Riku before he is rebooted to become Gido Ayumu, played by Suzuki. Hayase is a pastry chef who runs Hayase Pastry Shop with his wife Natsumi, son Takumi, and his mother. Even after his wife's disappearance, he has cheerfully supported his family, encouraging his son and caring for his mother who is not in good health. However, upon learning of the death of his missing wife Natsumi, he is rebooted from a good, ordinary citizen to the corrupt detective Gido Ayumu with a strong determination to get to the truth. Matsuyama's unconditional love for his family is embodied in this man, who will transform with a strong determination into the corrupt detective played by Suzuki.
The two apparently had numerous meetings before filming began to discuss each other's habits and approaches to their roles, and Suzuki thoroughly observed Matsuyama's minute movements and breathing on set to inherit the role. Matsuyama acted out scenes played by Suzuki, and vice versa, creating roles that felt natural and made it seem like they were the same person. Suzuki's performance, which allows him to play a variety of roles - the real Gido, Hayase completely transformed into Gido, and the natural Hayase disguised as Gido - is also likely to attract attention.
◇ Comment from producer Keigo Higashinaka
Matsuyama Kenichi poured his soul into the role of Hayase Riku, who takes on the crucial role of kicking off the story in the first episode. This story depicts the thrilling trajectory of miracles brought about by "unconditional love" for family and children. "Even if my appearance changes, I want to risk my life to save my family." This earnest, loving feeling is the most important framework of this work. We offered Matsuyama the role, believing that he, who faces each and every emotion with complete honesty, would be able to convey the subtleties of the heart right down to the fine details of his fingertips.
What I will never forget is the moment when the two of them first met. That miracle, when their hands were the exact same size, was a fateful scene that foreshadowed the transformation that was about to begin. As filming progressed, Suzuki melted into Matsuyama, and Matsuyama melted into Suzuki. The sight of the two literally sharing the life of "Hayase" and resonating with each other's souls was so shocking that it left all the staff speechless.
Whether you have never seen this story before or have already seen it, be sure to witness for yourself the love story that these two actors poured their hearts and souls into creating.
