It has been announced that the TV anime "Bread Thief," based on the popular picture book by Keiko Shibata, which has sold over 5 million copies in total, will be broadcast on NHK Educational TV from October 2026. A teaser PV has been released on YouTube, showcasing the "moving Bread Thief." A teaser visual depicting the bread Bread Thief holding up a loaf of bread has also been released.
The anime staff has also been announced, with Kyogoku Naohiko, known for works such as "Crayon Shin-chan chan the Movie: Clash! Rakuga Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes" and the Love Live series, serving as director, Miyako Mako as character designer, and Mochizuki Mariko as series composer. The anime will be produced by Shin-Ei Animation, known for the "Doraemon" series.
It was also announced that the work will be exhibited at the 2026 Sapporo Snow Festival, which will be held in Sapporo, Hokkaido from February 4th to 11th.
The first volume of "The Bread Thief" was published in April 2020 and is a popular picture book series that has been selected for various awards, including the Grand Prize at the 11th Libro Picture Book Awards. The story revolves around a Bread Thief wrapped in bread who causes trouble while searching for delicious bread.
