Tokyo Racecourse (Fuchu, Tokyo) will be featured in the documentary program "The Backyard: A Behind-the-Scenes Exploration of the Labyrinth of Knowledge," which will be broadcast on NHK Educational TV from 10:00 pm on December 17th. This second installment will take a look at the amazing behind-the-scenes work that ensures the safety of racehorses and jockeys.
The reporter is horse lover Takatoshi Kaneko. He begins by being given special access to the turf course early in the morning before the race, where he explains why the grass on the vast course is man-made for safety reasons.
After the race, the tour visits the clinic where the racehorses are treated. The tour also learns about the important care required to maintain the physical condition of racehorses, as well as the thorough system in place in case something happens to a jockey during a race. Kaneko is impressed by the ingenuity and efforts of the people behind the scenes to ensure safety.
