The show "Junin Jyuuni-iro ~As Many Family Forms as There Are Houses~" (MBS, Saturday 5pm, Kansai local and other stations), hosted by talent Mika Mifune and actor Taro Suruga, will air on November 1st, showcasing the renovation of an old Showa-era house in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City.
The residents (owners) are a family of five, consisting of an architect couple and their three children. The house is 51 years old and sits on a 520m² plot, and although it was plagued by mold, leaks, and even a wasp nest, the price was 29 million yen. The deciding factor, in addition to the price, was that the original blueprints were still in place. This was proof that the house was well-built, and it was precisely because the blueprints were there that they were able to carry out the update and continue to live in it without demolishing it.
On the second floor, some of the ceiling panels and walls were removed, creating an open space with a ceiling height of over three meters. Lauan wood, which was removed during the interior demolition, was reused as wall material and applied in an uneven pattern to add design appeal. On the first floor, a wall was removed to create a one-room apartment, which is used as the couple's office. The two-meter-wide outdoor deck is a great place to relax.
The renovation preserved the unique atmosphere of an old house. The wife said, "When we moved in, I felt the same sense of relief as when I went back to my grandparents' house. It's my first time living here, but it feels nostalgic."
"Jyunin Jyuiro" is a program that visits homes all over Japan and introduces the residents' preferences and charms for their homes. After broadcast, it will be available on TVer for one week.
