The key visual for the NHK drama "The Man Who Carries the Voice of August," starring actor Masahiro Motoki and set to air on August 13th, has been released.
This drama is the network's 80th anniversary of the end of the war drama. Based on the true story of journalist Akihiko Ito, who lived in Nagasaki and traveled all over Japan to collect the voices of atomic bomb survivors, the story of a strange encounter brought about by the atomic bomb is written by Shunsaku Ikebata, a screenwriter from Hiroshima Prefecture known for the historical dramas "Taiheiki" (1991) and "Kirin ga Kuru" (2020).
Masahiro Motoki will play Sadao Abe, a man who recounts the unforgettable experience of being an atomic bomb survivor to Tsujihara Tamotsu, played by Motoki Masahiro, Ito Aoi will play Kuno's sister, Shizuka Ishibashi, Ono Machiko will play Machiko Ono, and Tetsushi Tanaka.
The story is set in Japan in 1972, a time of rapid economic growth. It is no longer the postwar period. Every Japanese person is striving for prosperity. As if going against the trend of the times, Tsujihara Tamotsu (Motoki), a journalist from a broadcasting station in Nagasaki, begins to collect the voices of atomic bomb survivors. However, at the time, the damage caused by the atomic bomb was still fresh, and the experiences of atomic bomb survivors were not something that should be spoken about in the first place. Recording the experiences of atomic bomb survivors in such an era was a "lonely" and harsh task that was not understood by those around them.
During this time, Tsujihara has a fateful encounter with a survivor of the atomic bomb, Kuno Kazuhira (Abe). Tsujihara is deeply moved by the "voice" Kuno speaks. He wants to convey this "voice." However, that "voice" is also full of many mysteries... Broadcast on NHK General TV from 10:00 pm on August 13th.
