The new cast of the NHK Taiga drama "Toyotomi Brothers!" starring Taiga Nakano, which will be broadcast in 2026, was announced on February 3rd on the official NHK drama X (formerly Twitter), and it was revealed that Jun Kaname will appear as Mitsuhide Akechi. This is Kaname's first "Sengoku Taiga" drama, and he said with enthusiasm, "It's a new challenge, so I'll do my best with all my might."
"Toyotomi Brothers!" is a success story of hope and dreams depicting the miracle of the Toyotomi brothers who accomplished the great feat of unifying the country with their strong bond, with Hidenaga, the younger brother of "the ruler of Japan," as the main character. The script is written by Hiroyuki Yatsu, who is known for "Naoki Hanzawa" and the TV drama series "Ochoyan."
Akechi Mitsuhide, played by Kaname, is a wicked minister who drove his lord, Oda Nobunaga, the most powerful man in Japan, to commit suicide during the Honnoji Incident, said to be the greatest mystery in Japanese history, and greatly changed the course of the times. He was a man of character who was loved by his subjects and praised as a wise ruler, and is also said to have been a cultured and highly educated man, but his true face is still shrouded in mystery. He is "the mysterious wicked minister who killed his lord, Oda Nobunaga."
Kaname commented, "Mitsuhide is sensitive and smart, and I have the impression that he is more of an intellectual than a militant among the wicked ministers." Upon receiving the offer, he said, "I was very honored," and added, "Since he is a character that has been portrayed well in the historical drama, I would like to carry on the acting spirit of my predecessors and do my best to play him."
