The TV anime series "The Daily Life of a Middle-Aged Online Shopper in Another World," based on a manga serialized in the manga magazine "G Fantasy" (Square Enix), began airing on TOKYO MX and other stations on January 9th. The original is a comic adaptation of a light novel by Asakura Hifumi, who is popular on the novel submission site "Shosetsuka ni Naro," and the story is about the protagonist Kenichi, a forty-something man who is suddenly transported to another world, where he uses his cheat ability to use mail order sites to aim for a slow life. The voice actor Junichi Suwabe plays Kenichi in the anime, which has also been a hot topic. We spoke to Suwabe about the work and his dream of a slow life.
◇What if Junichi Suwabe was reincarnated in another world?
--The story has a unique setting in which a huge modern Japanese online shopping mall can be used in a different world. What was your honest impression when you read the original story and the scenario?
A modern man is suddenly thrown into a medieval European parallel world... I think that the plot is not uncommon these days, but the setting where he can use the online shopping services from his original world as they are is impressive. The main character appears to be an "ordinary old man," but in fact has many high specs. The more he struggles to achieve the slow life he longs for, the further away he seems to be from it, which is interesting.
--What did you keep in mind when playing the role of Kenichi?
I didn't have any particular intention in mind. I just read the script, watched the footage, and expressed my feelings.
--The first items Kenichi ordered online in the other world were food items like bread and milk. If you were in the same situation as Kenichi, what do you think you would order online?
If you're hungry at that time, you'll probably want food first, just like Kenichi. Next, a bag to put your belongings in. Then, items for self-defense, outdoor equipment, etc. For now, you'll want to gather the things you need to survive. Then, various foods and luxury items that can be used as communication tools with the local people. That's normal.
◇I don't aspire to a slow life, I'm always active!
--Since Kenichi aims to live a slow life in another world, please tell us what your ideal slow life would be.
I want to continue working hard for the rest of my life. I have never dreamed of a so-called "slow life." I want to work hard in the city as long as my body allows and as long as the world demands it (laughs).
