The Sunday Theatre drama " Mikami Sensei " (TBS, Sunday 9pm) starring actor Tori Matsuzaka will begin airing on January 19th. The drama will introduce the 29 unique students of class 2, year 3, of Rintoku Gakuin, where Mikami (Matsuzaka) is the homeroom teacher, in order of their attendance numbers. Here we will introduce Ryo Miyazawa (played by Yudai Toyoda), who is attendance number 27. A video introducing the students is also available on the drama's official SNS.
Miyazawa hates inept people. He has a strong sense of justice and is the type to say what he thinks clearly. He used to be in the light music club and likes Japanese rock music. He is hoping to get into Keio University.
Toyoda, who plays the role, commented, "I was very happy when I heard I would be appearing in Sunday Theater. I never thought I would be able to appear, so I just tried my best to do the acting that I can do. To prepare for the role, I looked at my high school albums and listened to the music that Miyazawa Ryo likes. Also, there are times in the play when I don't know anything about it, so I research it in my own way and try to imagine how Miyazawa feels about the students and teachers around him. On the set, the students talk to each other during breaks, so it's just like a real school. The atmosphere is friendly, but with Matsuzaka at the helm, we all concentrate when we're acting. We also have a great catering service, which is very helpful! I hope you will watch the whole show, as well as our own parts. There is something to learn from each part, and I think you will be made to think and discover something each time. I think it will be very interesting even if you watch it through the filter of each character."
" Mikami Sensei" is about a Ministry of Education bureaucrat, Takashi Mikami (Matsuzaka), who wants to change the Japanese education system, being ordered to transfer to a private high school, Rintoku Gakuin. In reality, it was a demotion, but Mikami himself takes to the podium and leads 18-year-old high school students living in the Reiwa era while standing up to authority... This is a "great reversal education revival story."
This completely original work will be written by Shimori Roba, who will be teaming up with Matsuzaka for the first time since the film "The Journalist," and will be writing the script for a prime-time drama series for the first time. Kazutaka Iida, who has been in charge of popular Sunday Theater dramas such as "Anti-Hero" (2024) and "VIVANT" (2023), will serve as producer.
