A gas explosion caused a fire inside the mine. The miners and staff worked hard to put out the fire, but it did not go out. They decided to seal the mine to cut off oxygen from the source of the fire. Because the gas concentration was also rising, only staff and qualified personnel were allowed to enter the mine.
Before Shinpei entered the mine, Rina (Ikeda Elaiza) called out to her son, "Hey, Makoto. Dad's going to work again soon. Give him your support." Shinpei touched his son's hand and said, "Will you cheer him on?" and told him, "Wait for me, Makoto."
Then, hugging Lina, who looked worried, and her son who was on her back, Shinpei reassured her, "We'll contain the fire. Don't worry, Araki Rina."
However, the sealing operation did not go well, and nearly 15 people were injured. As the fire was filling up with gas, it was determined that it was impossible to put out. The mine manager, Tatsuo (Ikki Sawamura), ordered everyone to evacuate from the mine. Once everyone had done so, he announced that the deeper areas where the fire was still burning would be submerged and abandoned.
Shinpei tried to retreat, but he inhaled carbon monoxide and saw his dead wife, Eiko (Megumi Sato). "She's dead. I'm hallucinating," he realized, and called out to Rina and Makoto, but his breathing was heavy. "The three of us can be happy here..." he said as he collapsed.
On social media, comments such as "I want my big brother Shinpei to survive," "I'm stunned for a while, I can't get up. Please, stay alive," "Big brother Shinpei is here to protect Rina so that she can continue to exist as 'Araki Rina'. He can't go. Rina and Makoto are still here. They'll be happy," "Shinpei, please come back alive!" and "I couldn't help but cry at Shinpei's last scene." were spreading.
