Studio Khara has announced its participation in the production of "BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1," a CG animated spin-off of the Indian film series "Baahubali." The project involves top studios from India, France, and the UK, with Studio Khara, globally renowned for the "Evangelion" series, representing Japan and handling a portion of the animation. Slow Curve, a Japanese company specializing in anime planning, production, and promotion, will also participate, handling the planning and production of the animation portion handled by Studio Khara. The project aims to connect Japanese and international creators and production teams, promoting international co-production.
In the animation portion, Akira Honma will serve as director and Noriko Ito as character designer. Mahiro Maeda, who directed "Shin Evangelion: The Movie," will also be participating as a main staff member from Studio Khara. Image cuts created by Studio Khara have also been released.
The film has been selected for the "Work in Progress" section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, the world's largest animation film festival currently being held in France, where the latest footage and production status will be presented.
"BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1" is a legitimate successor to the "Baahubali" film, expanding its world into areas only animation can depict. It boasts the highest production budget in Indian feature-length animation history. The story takes place after the events of the film, with Amarendra Baahubali, a human king, traveling to the afterlife and becoming embroiled in a cosmic war between the gods (Devas) and the Asuras.
Ishan Shukla, director of "Star Wars: Visions" Season 2, will direct the film, with music by M.M. Keeravani ("Baahubali," "RRR") and a screenplay by Scott Mosier ("How the Grinch Stole Christmas"). Prabhas and Ramya Krishnan, who starred in the live-action version, will provide voice acting. The film is scheduled for release in 2027.
