Wakayama Castle, the first castle built by Toyotomi Hidenaga, the protagonist of the 2026 NHK Taiga drama "Toyotomi Brothers!" (General TV, Sundays at 8:00 p.m. and other channels), will be featured on the program "You'll Want to Visit! Japan's Immortal Castles," which will be broadcast on NHK BS at 6:30 p.m. on December 29th.
"You'll Want to Visit! Japan's Immortal Castles" is a popular NHK series that explores the charm and mystery of castles. Wakayama Castle, a beautiful castle with a chalk-white tower and buildings, is famous as one of the castles of the Tokugawa Gosanke clan, but it was originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's younger brother, Hidenaga. Once you step inside the castle, you will be greeted by magnificent stone walls one after another. In fact, there are hidden clues to understand the castle from the Toyotomi era.
As the investigation progressed, it became clear that Hidenaga had been entrusted with a special mission to build the castle. Why did the Edo Shogunate designate the castle that was Toyotomi's base as one of the castles of the Gosanke? Castle archaeologist Yoshihiro Senda will unravel the mystery using the results of his latest research.
