It has been revealed that actor Yosuke Sugino will star in NHK's special drama "Proof of Eternity." The drama is based on the novel of the same name by Keiya Iwai, which depicts the conflicting feelings of young mathematicians as they attempt to solve the Collatz Conjecture, an unsolved problem in the world of mathematics. Sugino will play Mitsuya Ryoji, a genius at math. It has also been announced that Ryusei Ryo will play Kumazawa Yuichi, who enrolls in the same university as Ryoji, and Nagisa Sekimizu will play Saito Sana.
Ryoji, played by Sugino, is a genius mathematician who enrolls in the Kyomei University Mathematics Department as a special recommended student. Since he was a child, he has been blessed with a genius mathematician talent, but he has been unable to fit in with the people around him. However, after meeting Kumazawa and the others, he finally finds his place in the world, but his talent influences those around him and he is driven into loneliness. Sugino lost weight intensively this time and took on the rigors of the role.
Sugino commented, "As I write this, filming has not yet begun, and I am still trying to figure out how to express Ryoji's anguish, joy, and conflict, but when I received the offer I was excited at the thought of being able to express Ryoji's difficulty in life. I hope we can all create a memorable work."
Yuichi, played by Ryusei, is a special recommended student who enrolls in the mathematics department of Kyomei University, just like Ryoji. He is attracted to Ryoji's outstanding talent, but at the same time feels jealous and takes a different path. However, he discovers a description of the proof of the Collatz Conjecture in Ryoji's Mitsuya Notebook, and by attempting to unravel it, he comes face to face with Ryoji again. Ryusei says, "I want to embody the bittersweet youth of people who love mathematics and are at its mercy."
Sana, played by Sekimizu, is also a specially recommended student in the Mathematics Department at Kyomei University, with an easy-going personality and a laid-back attitude. While working on difficult mathematical proofs with Ryoji and Kumazawa, she is inspired by Ryoji's genius talent and begins to explore new possibilities for herself without being fixated on mathematics. Sekimizu said, "The Sana I play is someone who can honestly rejoice in other people's success and happiness, and who can accept that 'other people are other people, and I am me.' I would like to portray the character while cherishing the awkwardness and straightforwardness that I had as a teenager."
The drama will be broadcast on NHK BS8K from 8:30 pm on March 22nd.
