NHK's history program "Rekishi Detective" (General) will air "Ancient Idol! The Secrets of Haniwa" from 10pm on October 16th. Hanimaru, the character from the popular educational program for children "Oi! Hanimaru", will also appear in the studio.
Haniwa are beloved by people of all ages and genders. This year is said to be the year of haniwa, with a large-scale "Haniwa Exhibition" being held at the Tokyo National Museum (Taito Ward, Tokyo).
However, there are still many mysteries surrounding what haniwa were made for and why they disappeared, so the program will thoroughly investigate haniwa from all over Japan. The wide variety of their shapes, including people, animals, ships, and houses, give us a glimpse into the lives of ancient people.
