It has been announced that a new animated film based on Riyoko Ikeda's classic manga, The Rose of Versailles, will be released on January 31, 2025. Character visuals have also been released that show the way the main characters, Oscar and François de Jarjayes, live their lives. They depict Oscar plunging into the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette looking beautiful yet somehow fragile, André Grandier gazing into the distance, and Hans Axel von Fersen.
Each visual is accompanied by a catchphrase. Oscar's is "Go ahead, as your passion dictates," Marie Antoinette's is "Love, how cruel and beautiful," André's is "I will protect you until the end of my life," and Fersen's is "Even if it is an forbidden love."
Regarding the visuals, Mariko Oka, who is in charge of character design, commented, "I arranged the four characters, each with their own unique charm, while keeping an eye on the balance so that everyone would look glamorous. Because there are few decorations, Andre's design tends to be simple, but I drew his gaze and expression to express his feelings for Oscar, quietly but with passion. Antoinette and Fersen have exclusive costumes that do not appear in the main story."
Mubichike cards featuring four character visuals, teaser visuals, and main visuals will go on sale from October 11th.
"The Rose of Versailles" is a masterpiece manga by Ikeda that was serialized in "Weekly Margaret" (Shueisha) from 1972 to 1973. It is set during the French Revolution in the late 18th century and beautifully depicts the love and life of Oscar, a beautiful woman who dresses as a man, and Marie Antoinette, the innocent queen who came to France from neighboring Austria.
The animated film will be directed by Yoshimura Ai, who has also directed "Ao Haru Ride" and "Cheer Boys!!". Hiroyuki Sawano, known for "Attack on Titan" and other works, will serve as music producer, with Sawano and KOHTA YAMAMOTO handling the music. The film will be produced by MAPPA, known for "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "Chainsaw Man." Sawashiro Miyuki will play Oscar, Hirano Aya will play Marie Antoinette, Toyonaga Toshiyuki will play Andre, and Kato will play Fersen.
