The new cast for the live-action movie ``WIND BREAKER'' (directed by Kentaro Hagiwara), based on Satoru Nii's popular manga, has been announced, with Rikako Yagi, Yukiteru Yamashita, and Noritaka Hamao appearing in the cast.
The original work is a popular delinquent manga by Niisan, currently being serialized on Kodansha's web manga service "Magapoke." The story follows the protagonist, Haruka Sakura , played by Koshi Mizukami , who has no redeeming qualities other than fighting, as he grows as a member of the " Bofurin " group that protects the town at Furin Fuurin High School School, a school for delinquents.
Yagi will be playing Tachibana Kotoha, the only female character in the film. She works at the "Post Cafe", a cafe located in a corner of the Toho shopping district where the main character Sakura attends Fuurin High School. She is friendly and not afraid to get involved with delinquents, and is the character who cares for and watches over Sakura and her friends every day. "Honestly, I was incredibly happy. I've read both the original manga and watched the anime, and I've become such a genuine fan of 'WIND BREAKER' that I've even gone out and bought merchandise (laughs). I was truly honored and very happy to be able to play the role of Kotoha," she commented.
Yamashita and Hamao play members of the Bofurin, a delinquent gang that is hostile to Sakura and the other members of Bofurin. Yamashita plays the bank president, Tomiyama Choji, who, despite his innocent smile, is more obsessed with Bofurin than anyone else, while Hamao plays Togame Jo, the vice president of Shishito Ren and number two who is loyal to Tomiyama.
Yamashita commented, "Usamiyama always flashes a cute smile in front of everyone, but his eyes aren't smiling, so my first impression was, 'Oh, this kid has something...' and I immediately knew he was a character who was carrying something on his mind. As I read the original work, I realized that his feelings, like not knowing what to do, were similar to mine, so I was able to empathize with him and create the character."
Hamao explained how he prepared for the role of Togame, who is dressed distinctively in a workman's kimono, geta (wooden clogs), and sunglasses, saying, "It would be the worst if I couldn't act because I was worried about the geta, so I basically lived in geta for a few months before filming and lost 5 to 6 kg to get closer to the character's appearance." He reflected, "I played the role with great respect for the teacher who entrusted me with this work, which is like my child."
