Emma Miyazawa, who will play the older sister Tomo in the 2026 NHK Taiga drama "Toyotomi Brothers!" (General TV, Sunday 8pm and other channels), appeared at the "Taiga Drama 'Toyotomi Brothers!' Talk Live in Kiyosu" event held at Kasuga Community Center Large Hall (Kiyosu City, Aichi Prefecture) on January 17th. This will be Miyazawa's second appearance in a Taiga drama following "The 13 Lords of the Shogun" (2022). In this work, Miyazawa plays the protagonist Hojo Yoshitoki's younger sister, Mikie (Awa no Tsubone), and spoke about the "differences" between her role as Tomo in "Toyotomi Brothers!" and her role as Tomo.
Regarding her two roles, Miyazawa revealed, "People say that the characters of Mie and Tomo are similar, but I don't think they are that similar." She continued, "I think they are somewhat similar in terms of their roles. I think they are similar in the sense that they are both caught up in an incredible whirlpool of history thanks to (or because of) their brothers and rise through the ranks. However, Mie, being the younger sister, is somewhat of a bystander, a realistic character who thinks things will work out somehow, but also unreliable and you can't really tell what she's thinking. I think she is a character who is a little mischievous and hasn't forgotten her childlike heart."
On the other hand, regarding Tomo, she said, "As the eldest daughter, she has a strong sense of responsibility. She has a strong will to do things herself, so she has great drive. So if the two of them were actually sitting next to each other, Tomo would be running around thinking, 'Let's do this, let's do that,' while next to her, Mii would be munching on sweets and grinning, and I think that's the kind of difference there is."
When asked again about Tomo's character, Miyazawa confessed, "I actually think of her as a kind older sister." She continued, "She's definitely a tough woman, and I think that in the Warring States period, you have to be tough to survive. In the second episode, when Koichiro (Nakano Taiga) hesitates to go to Kiyosu on his own, she boldly says, 'I'm getting married now, so you should just go quickly, make up your mind,' so that he doesn't have to hesitate too much, and although she seems a little strict, she boldly pushes him forward so that he can set off on his journey without any regrets. I thought, 'Tomo-san is so kind.'"
At this point, Miyazawa turned to the fans in the audience and asked, "How is it?", which erupted in applause, and she replied happily, "That was great, that was great."
"Toyotomi Brothers!" is the 65th taiga drama. It is a success story of hope and dreams, depicting the miracle of the Toyotomi brothers, Hidenaga (Koichiro) and his older brother Hideyoshi (Tokichiro), who achieve the great feat of unifying the country with their strong bond.
