Actor Toru Nomaguchi appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on December 19th. He is 52 years old and spoke about his encounter with acting, his hobbies, how he refreshes himself, and more.
When he entered Shinshu University and went to see a play to welcome new students, "I saw a really shining senior and I thought I'd like to help him out, so I joined. But then they didn't have enough people so I ended up performing, and when I did, everyone praised me to no avail." At first, he played the role of a "country detective." "I think they thought I did pretty well for my first time, but everyone praised me, so I got a little carried away and decided to do theater," he said, embarking on this path.
He had no hobbies at all, but discovered one in his 40s. When he met actor Hamada Mari on a film set, she introduced him to bouldering, saying, "I think you'd probably be good at it." "When I actually tried it, I thought it was so fun, and I got hooked. At times, I (bouldered) 23 days a month," he said. "It was like a puzzle that uses your body, like being able to climb by simply changing the direction of one foot, and I really enjoyed making discoveries like that." After taking a break from bouldering due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he started to suffer from pain from frozen shoulder and a sudden back strain, "so I haven't been able to go." "I'm hoping to get back somehow, but I'm afraid of the initial muscle pain, so I haven't been able to go yet."
Her favorite ways to refresh are "walking the dog and cooking." She cooks when she "gets stuck trying to remember her lines, or when she feels like she can't do it anymore, and it's time to change her mindset." She opens the fridge and quickly cooks with what she has on hand. "I never cook anything flashy."
