The body of an elderly man (played by Kosuda) is found in a residential area. A paper bag containing 30 million yen in cash was found nearby, but the First Investigative Division determines that the condition of the body means no crime is involved. Ukyo (played by Mizutani) and Kaoru (played by Terawaki) are forced to identify the body and begin their investigation with only a few clues.
A parent and child at the park shared the information. The old man would read letters to children in the park and was affectionately known as "Mr. Kafka." Kafka is a Czech literary figure who once wrote a letter from a doll to a sad girl who had lost her beloved doll, bringing comfort to the girl.
The old man was reading a story based on this anecdote to a young girl who had lost her doll. Ukyo and Kaoru visit a nearby coffee shop that sells the envelope the old man used, and hear the story from the owner (Miyamoto), but... Who is the old man who collapsed with 30 million yen in his hands?
The script was written by Tomoyuki Takimoto and the director was Takumi Anyoji.
