The main visual for the new TV anime adaptation of "High School! Kimengumi," a comedy manga by Shinzawa Motoei that was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) in the 1980s, has been released. The visual depicts the Kimengumi in eccentric poses, and also features Kawa Yui, Uru Chie, Amano Jako, Nihiruta You, Kumo Do Kai, Kiride Shou, and Harumaki Don. The series is also attracting attention as it will be adapted into an anime for the first time in about 39 years.
The main PV, featuring unique characters, was also released on YouTube. It was also announced that the band "BREIMEN" and singer-songwriter TOMOO will be in charge of the opening theme "Funky Spice feat. TOMOO," and the band "Divorce Legend" will be in charge of the ending theme "Suteki!!," and the songs were unveiled in the PV. The soundtrack will be composed by Taku Iwasaki.
Additional cast members have also been announced, including Toriumi Kosuke as Harumaki Don, a classmate of Ichidou Rei from elementary school, Hikasa Yoko as Ikari Masuda, Rei and his classmates' homeroom teacher at junior high school, Yui Horie as Wakato Ran, Rei and his classmates' homeroom teacher at the high school they attend, Tomokazu Sugita as Kotoshiro Sakugo, the high school assistant homeroom teacher, Katsuyuki Konishi as Ishizuna Takuma, and Show Hayami.
Also appearing in the cast are Imai Fumiya as his high school classmate, Mami Ichiro, Junya Enoki as Nikaidomenichi, Aimi as Oda Mari, Ishikawa Yui as Monozuki Tamami, and other members of the Ichido family, including Ueda Yoji as the father, Takuseki, Nakamura Kanna as the sister, Kiri, and Okada Yuki as the family dog, Lassie.
The original series began as "3-nen Kimengumi" in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1980, and was renamed "High School! Kimengumi" in 1982 as the characters progressed to higher education. It's a slapstick school comedy featuring the Kimengumi, a group of five middle school students: Ichidou Rei, Reikoshi Go, Idese Kiyoshi, Oma Jin, and Monohoshi Dai, along with Kawa Yui and Uru Chie. The TV anime, which aired from 1985 to 1987, also gained popularity with its theme song, sung by Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, a spin-off unit of the idol group Onyanko Club.
The new anime will be directed by Kazuaki Seki, known for films such as "Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey" and "Beethoven Fabrication," and produced by Animation Studio Seven. It will be broadcast on Fuji TV's anime slot "Noitamina" every Friday at 11:30 pm starting January Getsuku, 2026.
