The show "Junin Jyuuni-iro ~As Many Family Forms as There Are Houses~" (MBS, Saturday 5pm, Kansai local and other stations) hosted by talent Mika Mifune and actor Taro Suruga will be broadcasting from 4:30pm on October 25th and will introduce the "nesting house" in Taito Ward, Tokyo.
The owner is a family of three with one child. Last year, he inherited the land from his wife's parents and built a house there. The road in front is narrow, and the house is in a densely populated residential area with neighboring houses on both sides and behind. The house is tiny, measuring just 33 sq. meters, about the size of a two-car garage, but the entrance is large enough for all three family members to sit side by side and take off their shoes.
The main part is on the second floor. The 18-tatami living/dining/kitchen area is bright and open, and the kitchen tapers towards the edge. The residents wanted the room to be bright and to have privacy from the surrounding area. The "nesting" structure met these conflicting requests. The entire building is shaped like a smaller box placed inside a larger one. Another interior wall has been added, and is angled 10 degrees to the exterior wall.
The house was a dream come true, even though it was a tiny 33 sq. m (10 tsubo) home. The husband said, "I thought it would be quite small before we moved in, but that's not the case after living here," and the wife nodded, saying, "In fact, it feels spacious."
"Jyunin Jyuiro" is a program that visits homes all over Japan and introduces the residents' preferences and charms for their homes. After broadcast, it will be available on TVer for one week.
