NHK's popular nature program "Darwin Has Come!" (General) will be broadcasting "First Close-Up! The Super-Speed Hunter, Peregrine Falcon Chigo" from 7:30 pm on October 19th. The program will be the first to cover the "super-speed hunter," the Peregrine Falcon Chigo. The program will cover the unknown ecology of the bird, including its speed at which it can fend off the world's fastest falcon, its incredible hunting techniques for capturing swallows, and its loving parenting.
The fastest bird in the world is the peregrine falcon. However, the Darwin team discovered a bird that can overwhelm and repel even the peregrine falcon with its speed. Its name is the Japanese sparrowhawk. Despite its small body the size of a pigeon, it is an ultra-fast hunter that can catch swallows and dragonflies in an instant with its incredible speed.
This time, NHK will be conducting a long-term, in-depth location shoot for the first time in the 60-year history of its nature programs. The show will reveal the little-known ecology of these birds, including their incredible hunting techniques, their turbulent parenting lives, and mysterious behaviors that even experts have never seen before.
